Transitioning immigrants into the community

Man in hat sitting on a porchNEEDHAM, Mass. — Portland is not a large city by national standards – its population stands at about 67,000 people – but it is equipped with more than a dozen agencies with the sole purpose of helping immigrants transition into the community. Hope Acts is one of them; the organization offers housing, education and other assistance. Portland Adult Education also offers a wide range of programs that immigrants can take advantage of, including high school equivalency, English language classes and a program designed for foreign-trained professionals called the New Mainers’ Resource Center.
